What is new in 2.0

Options stay the core. Version 2.0 adds a second track beside them, and a Mac build beside Windows. A Cashflow Engine backtester for stock and ETF portfolios is in development. It is not part of the Workbench today.

  • Stocks and ETFs, next to options

The same Interactive Brokers connection now runs stocks and ETFs beside options. Seasonals and signals can buy or sell a symbol on set days, gated by a condition such as RSI or an EMA. A relative-strength screen rotates sector ETFs inside a NASDAQ or S&P universe. After a stock or ETF fill, the stop and the target sit at the broker.

  • Mac, and Windows

Version 2.0 installs on macOS, Apple silicon and Intel, as well as Windows. There is no Linux build. TWS has to run on that same machine, and the machine has to stay awake while the market is open.

  • Dynamic underlying search

Underlyings are searched when you configure a trade, instead of being picked from a fixed symbol list. Anything you can trade at Interactive Brokers is in range, permissions and market data allowing.

  • 0DTE through long-dated

Options run from same-day expiration out past a year. One application covers the short end and the long end, with the entry and exit rules you write.

Stocks and ETFs use the same Interactive Brokers connection. Each row is a symbol, a quantity, a target, and a stop.

Why IBKR users look at it

If you already trade at Interactive Brokers, the daily routine is TWS, the contract, the order, the position. OptionsApp takes that routine and runs the rules you saved.

  • Official TWS API

OptionsApp connects through Interactive Brokers’ TWS API and executes the rules you configure, on your own account. You still decide what gets traded.

  • Introducing brokers too

An introducing broker works when the account is on Interactive Brokers infrastructure and has TWS and API access, the right permissions, and market data. OptionsApp names CapTrader and LYNX. WH SelfInvest’s Multi-Market account and ARMO Broker also document an IBKR relationship and TWS. Not every account at those brands qualifies.

  • Auto-reconnect

The app reconnects to TWS on its own after a drop. That keeps a session alive. It does not replace looking at the first days yourself.

  • Telegram alerts

Fills, positions, and app status can go to Telegram, so you are not watching the desktop for every line.

Accounts in USD, CHF, and EUR are reported in the app, with conversion. Start on an IBKR paper account. Paper needs its own market-data subscriptions. The connection details we actually use are on Connecting TWS and IBKR.

From the Workbench to the account

Cashflow Engine decides the portfolio. OptionsApp is one way to run it. They are separate products. The Engine never touches your broker. OptionsApp only sees the file you export.

  1. 01

    Portfolio in the Workbench

The research already happened. Pick the strategies in the Cashflow Engine Workbench and combine them into a portfolio. You are not asked to backtest them again.

  2. 02

    Export one file

Export to OptionsApp writes the templates, the entry times, and the entry conditions into a file OptionsApp can read.

  3. 03

    Import, then paper

In the walkthrough the import took about 30 seconds, entry conditions included (chapter 24:22). Rename it to match the Workbench name, activate it, and run it on a paper account first.

Coming from Trade Automation Toolbox?

Both tools run rules you write. They do not do the same job. Trade Automation Toolbox is the stronger fit when the broker or the built-in backtest is the point. OptionsApp 2.0 is the stronger fit when the account is Interactive Brokers and the book is more than options.

Reasons to stay

  • Backtesting is built into the automation app.
  • More brokers: Interactive Brokers, TradeStation, Tradier, and Schwab. OptionsApp is IBKR only, including IBKR introducing brokers.
  • TradeStation clients can use Trade Automation Toolbox at no software cost.
  • Your current templates already do what you want.

Reasons to look at 2.0

  • Options, stocks, and ETFs on one IBKR connection.
  • Windows and Mac, not Windows only.
  • Exit rules on a single leg, a group, or the whole combo.
  • A Cashflow Engine portfolio imports in about 30 seconds, entry conditions included.

OptionsApp says it credits the remaining term of a Trade Automation Toolbox subscription if you switch. Email info@optionsapp.de. The feature-by-feature table, with both vendors' documentation cited, is the comparison article. The video covers it from 23:02.

Where to get help

  1. 01 · OptionsApp

Their own English documentation covers installation, the TWS API, conditions, stocks and ETFs, and troubleshooting. Their Discord is their support channel.

  2. 02 · Cashflow Engine

Open OptionsApp through the partner link and Cashflow Engine helps you get connected, in English, in our Discord. That path is written up on the OptionsApp overview. A Windows server, if you use one, has its own VPS hardening guide.

IBKR automation setup checklist

The list Cashflow Engine sends to people setting OptionsApp up on an Interactive Brokers account. It is here in full. The form is Cashflow Engine: it emails you a copy and, once you confirm, adds you to the research list.

  1. 1

Account. Interactive Brokers, or an IBKR-based broker with TWS and API access. OptionsApp names CapTrader and LYNX. WH SelfInvest’s Multi-Market account and ARMO Broker also document an Interactive Brokers relationship and TWS. Not every account at those brands qualifies. Enable the product permissions for what you intend to trade.

  2. 2

Machine. OptionsApp 2.0 runs on Windows and on macOS (Apple silicon and Intel). There is no Linux build. TWS runs on that same machine, and the machine has to stay awake while the market is open.

  3. 3

API. In TWS open Configuration, then API, then Settings. Enable ActiveX and Socket Clients. Turn Read-Only API off, or the app cannot place orders. Use socket port 7497 for paper and 7496 for live.

  4. 4

Market data. Subscribe to data for the products you trade. A paper account needs its own subscriptions, separate from the live account.

  5. 5

Paper first. Import the portfolio, activate it, and watch the simulated orders before you point the same configuration at a live account.

  6. 6

Alerts. Telegram can report fills, positions, and app status. OptionsApp also auto-reconnects to TWS. Check the first sessions yourself anyway.

  7. 7

From the Workbench. Export the portfolio, import it in OptionsApp (about 30 seconds in the walkthrough, entry conditions included), rename it so it matches the Workbench name, then activate it on paper.

  8. 8

Leaving Trade Automation Toolbox. OptionsApp says it credits the remaining term of a Trade Automation Toolbox subscription if you email info@optionsapp.de. Stay if your broker is one OptionsApp does not connect to, or if you want backtesting inside the automation app.

Questions

Does OptionsApp backtest strategies?

No. OptionsApp executes rules and records what happened. It does not include historical backtesting. Cashflow Engine is the research layer: Workbench portfolios are already backtested. Export one and run it. You do not rebuild that research inside OptionsApp.

Does OptionsApp 2.0 run on a Mac?

Yes. Version 2.0 runs on macOS (Apple silicon and Intel) and on Windows. There is no Linux build. TWS has to run on the same machine, and that machine has to stay on while the market is open. A Windows VPS is one way to do that. A Mac that does not sleep is another.

Is the OptionsApp link a Cashflow Engine trial?

No. The dark button opens OptionsApp, a separate product by a partner company. Any trial or price shown there belongs to OptionsApp. This page does not state a length. Cashflow Engine provides the backtested portfolios. The blue buttons on this page stay on Cashflow Engine.

I use Trade Automation Toolbox. Should I switch?

Not automatically. Trade Automation Toolbox leads if you want backtesting inside the automation app, or if your broker is TradeStation, Tradier, or Schwab. TradeStation clients can use Trade Automation Toolbox at no software cost. OptionsApp 2.0 leads if you want options, stocks, and ETFs on one Interactive Brokers connection, Windows and Mac, or exit rules on a leg, a group, or the whole combo. OptionsApp says it credits the remaining term of a Trade Automation Toolbox subscription when you email info@optionsapp.de. The full comparison is the Trade Automation Toolbox vs OptionsApp 2.0 article on this site.

What does OptionsApp cost?

OptionsApp publishes its prices in euros on its own pricing page. This page does not list them. Brokerage commissions, exchange data, and a machine that stays on are separate from the software fee.

Which brokers does it connect to?

OptionsApp’s site says it works with Interactive Brokers and its white-label partners through the official TWS API, and it names CapTrader and LYNX as brokers of IBKR accounts. WH SelfInvest’s Multi-Market account and ARMO Broker each document an Interactive Brokers relationship and TWS. Not every account at those brands qualifies, and API access still has to be turned on. It does not connect to TradeStation, Tradier, or Schwab.

Can I import a Cashflow Engine portfolio?

Yes. Export a Workbench portfolio and import the file in OptionsApp. In the walkthrough that import took about 30 seconds and included the entry conditions. Rename the imported portfolio so the name matches the Workbench, then activate it on a paper account first.
